HERITAGE GEESE

Ron Swanson
Embden Geese

Embden (or Emden) Geese are a domesticated breed named after Emden in North-West Germany where they likely originated. Embden Geese, or Swan Geese as they are sometimes called due to their white plumage and long neck, is a heavy goose breed often raised for its high quality meat. Embden Geese are sufficient layers producing around 30 eggs per year, with an average weight of 170 grams.

Embden Geese are not the most aggressive goose breed but are still excellent flock guardians as the males utilize their shrill high-pitched honks to alert other birds that a predator is circling above. Males can be quite protective of their female companions but we find the males are less territorial than the females, who are prone to correcting any chickens who get too close to them or their preferred areas.

Embden Geese grow to around 1 meter (three feet) after three years, making them one of the tallest breeds of geese in the world. To top off their swan-like coloration and form, they have gorgeous blue eyes that are perfect little windows to their unique and complex personalities.

Our small flock consists of Mother Goose and Ron Swanson who will provide us with the eggs we need to expand our flock for 2026.

Other Geese

Though we plan to be able to raise more goose breeds in the future, we will be doing so strictly for the purpose of conservation, and priority will be given to breeds that are critically endangered, or high risk.
